Speck Plastics and Bombardier Go the Distance Together

Nazareth, PA, June 12, 2008 –Speck Plastics, Inc. and Bombardier, manufacturer of aerospace and transportation solutions, have come a long way. The business relationship began back in the 1970s between Speck Plastics, Inc. and UTDC, a Canadian manufacturer that would later be acquired by Bombardier.

Since the year 2000, Speck Plastics has manufactured plastic parts that go inside Bombardier’s BiLevel passenger railway cars. The twenty-two different parts each originated from a first article part created by Speck Plastics. The parts were “finish pieces” or pieces that would be seen by the consumer – or in this case, the railway commuter. They had to be visually flawless, fit perfectly, and sustain the use and abuse of millions of railway travelers.

An added consideration was their weight. Each of the thirteen CAN/US-based authorities that purchase the railway cars has different weight specifications that Bombardier and its suppliers, like Speck Plastics, have to follow. Since additional weight could damage the rails, adhering to the weight guidelines is critically important. Each part Speck Plastics creates for Bombardier is carefully weighed before it is packaged and shipped.

“Just like whenever a new partnership is formed, trust needs to be built. We did everything we could to earn Bombardier’s trust with their critical parts,” stated co-owner Suzann Speck.

Despite the long physical distance between the two companies, their long-standing relationship was built by hosting weekly status meetings, conducting follow-up notations, attending on-site visits to both Speck Plastics’ facilities and to Bombardier’s offices, and by conducting manufacturing floor inspections. Today, Speck Plastics produces anywhere from twenty to forty car sets per year for Bombardier.
